What does freefall feel like?

You’ve managed to pluck up the courage to include tandem skydiving in your holiday itinerary for South Africa and wondering what it’s going to feel like while hurtling towards the earth with your trusted tandem instructor. When making the booking, you will get the option of jumping from 10,000 feet or 12,000 feet giving you up to 40 seconds of freefall. But what does freefall feel like? Is it a sense of flying or is it closer to falling? Some people have referred to it as a sense of feeling weightless. Others have said it doesn’t feel like falling because you can feel the push of air against you as you pick up speed. It’s very windy, loud, and fast.

According to the dictionary, the definition of freefall is “the state or condition of falling through the air to the ground.” That’s correct but each person who has done a skydive, be it only a single tandem jump or thousands of sports jumps, has their own opinion about how it feels to freefall. For local Mossel Bay skydiver and tandem instructor Corne Krummels, the feeling of freefall is “flying fast, but time stands still”. For first-time tandem skydiver, Nadia van Niekerk, freefall is “the feeling of weightlessness and wind howling through your ears. An unforgettable experience!” Another sport skydiver, Gregory Bailie, describes it as a surreal feeling of sensory overload.

According to our previous tandem customers, words used to describe the feeling are;

“memorable”
“breathtaking”
“super cool”
“a beautiful experience”
The feeling of freefall is quite unique to each person. You can read more reviews on Tripadvisor .

The best way to find out is to take the plunge. You know you can! Make the booking, come along and take in the views from 10,000 feet at one of the most scenic drop zones on the Garden Route of sunny South-Africa, Skydive Mossel Bay!

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
